CANCER: HARMFUL DISEASES






This is a general term to describe malignant growths in tissue, of which CARCINOMA is of epithenial and SARCOMA of connective tissue origin as in bone and muscle. The basic aetiology of cancer remains unknown but many potential causes are now recognized e.g Cigarette smoking, Ionizing radiation, Exposure to certain chemicals and over exposure to the sun.
Hereditary factors also play an important part in its development. A cancerous growth is one that is not encapsulated, but infiltrates surrounding tissues, the cells of which it replaces by its own. It is spread by the lymph and blood vessels and causes metastases in other parts of the body. Death is caused by destination of organs to a degree incompatible with life, by extreme debility and anaemia or by haemorrhage.

EARLY WARNING SIGNS OF CANCER
  • Any lump or thickening, especially in the breast, lip or tongue.
  • Any irregular or unexplained bleeding. Blood in the urine or bowel movement . Blood or bloody discharge from the nipple or any body opening. Unexplained vaginal bleeding or any bleeding after the menopause.
  • A sore that does not heal, particularly around the mouth, tongue or lips, or anywhere on the skin.
  • Noticeable changes in the colour or size of wart, mole or birthmark.
  • Loss of appetite or continual indigestion
  • Persistent hoarseness, cough or difficulty in swallowing
  • Persistent change in normal ellimination (bowel habits)
Special note; pain is not usually an early warning sign of cancer.
